Our Story
Welcome to The Wrestlers
We’re one of Cambridge’s original Thai pubs — and we’re proud of it.
The Wrestlers was first established by Tom Goode, who brought Thai food to Newmarket Road long before it became a staple of Cambridge’s dining scene. In 2007, Kalaya Phookha and her son Jack took over — and with them came something special — a deeper connection to the food itself.
Kalaya grew up in Nakhon Sawan, one of five sisters who learned to cook at their grandmother’s side. She later lived in Pattaya before making her way to Cambridge, and it’s her family’s recipes and love of feeding people well that have always sat at the heart of The Wrestlers’ kitchen. From the early days, her sons Jack, Jock and Aston were by her side, helping build the pub into what it is today.
Now with Kalaya retired, the three brothers carry on her legacy — running The Wrestlers with the same warmth, generosity and authenticity she instilled in them.
Food is at the heart of what we offer. We’re known for our generous mains — proper, satisfying portions that we believe great pub food should always deliver. The only small plates you’ll find here are on the kids’ menu, though you’re more than welcome to order one as an adult if you’re after something a little lighter.
We’re equally proud of our cask ales. A great meal deserves a great pint, and we keep our bar stocked with quality real ales to match.
Whether you’re joining us for a long lazy lunch or a relaxed evening dinner, you’ll find a warm, unpretentious welcome — the kind that only a true Cambridge local can offer.
Closed Mondays · Lunch and dinner served Tuesday to Sunday · Evenings are popular, so booking ahead is recommended.
